Totem Cafe, Halifax

With a great breakfast, baby friendly high chairs, fully accessible baby changing and children’s cutlery, Totem is a great spot for brunching with babies.

We stumbled across Totem entirely by accident, after trying to visit Eureka and being turned away (that’s a whole other story!) we decided to make the most of being in Halifax and get some breakfast.

It always feels a bit risky going to a new cafe with a baby if you’ve not done your research beforehand, but I was pleasantly surprised at how baby-friendly Totem was. We sat out in the arcade rather than inside the cafe itself as there was a bit more space for the pram, although to be honest I think we’d have been fine going inside too.

While they didn’t have a dedicated kids menu (or at least, we couldn’t see one) they did have beans on toast on the breakfast menu which was perfect for my little one. It was a nice surprise that when they brought this out to the table: they brought a children’s fork with them. Similarly with the water; we asked for water for the table and they brought out two adult waters and a plastic beaker for baby.

They also noticed we had a pram and brought out a high chair (an IKEA Antilop!) for us, without having to ask which was a lovely touch.

The food was great, and although it felt like quite a premium cafe it was actually very reasonably priced, with three adult meals coming to £25.

I was even more pleasantly surprised to see that the toilet was really baby friendly. There’s only one toilet in the cafe so it’s not gender specific, and it was lovely and clean, with a really big cubicle so there was plenty of space for the pram, and a fold down baby changing table.

Overall I’d definitely recommend Totem, the staff were great and it was way more baby friendly than I expected.
