Operation: Out of the House

Popping into town or to the supermarket suddenly feels like it requires military grade planning when you have a newborn. Let me take some of the stress away by showing you all the best baby changing, bottle prepping and breastfeeding rooms in your area.

Breastfeeding Friendly Spaces

You have the legal right to breastfeed anywhere, but I know how daunting it can be to feed when you’re out and about. To be considered a breastfeeding friendly space it must be either a dedicated breastfeeding space, a space specific to babies and children (e.g. a play cafe) or someone I have personally been and feel comfortable recommending.

Bottle Making Facilities

Bottle feeding out and about takes a little more planning than breastfeeding, so be listed here as a bottle feeding friendly space, the venue must offer at minimum a comfortable, welcoming seating area with table space, and access to hot water (not just a cold-water tap). Spaces specifically for children such as play cafés are automatically included, as these tend to have the facilities parents need as standard.

Baby Changing Facilities

All Baby Changing

This shows all the places in the inclusive baby changing facilities list plus those that are only in the ladies toilets, with no access to baby changing facilities in the mens/unisex spaces.

Inclusive Baby Changing

To be considered inclusive, a changing area must be either a standalone baby changing room, non-gendered toilet with a changing table or baby changing in all available toilets.

High Chairs

This might be a tad pedantic, but to me, the kind of high chairs on offer is important. When my baby was just starting to sit independently the type of high chair made such a big difference to our experience of a cafe.

The smaller, more structured chairs like the IKEA Antilop supported him nicely and felt safe as there wasn’t anywhere he could slip through, whereas the larger wooden style chairs with only a nylon strap between each leg felt too big and like he might just slip right out the bottom. For that reason, I’ve added this level of detail to our filters so you find a high chair suitable for younger babies.
